Maiten Lodge Chubut is located in the wilderness of southern Patagonia, a region that many fly fishers dream about but few ever experience. Rivers flow cold and clear through landscapes that remain largely unchanged from a century ago, creating an authentic wilderness fishing destination.
The lodge provides comfortable accommodations while serving as a base for exploring the remote rivers, streams, and lakes that define the program. Guests enjoy genuine Patagonian hospitality together with the service standards found throughout the Pointer collection.
One of the lodge’s defining advantages is its extended November through April season. While northern Patagonian properties conclude their seasons in February, Maiten Lodge Chubut continues through autumn, allowing anglers to experience exceptional fishing during March and April when trout are in outstanding condition and Patagonia transforms into spectacular autumn colors.

The fishing program covers a diverse range of wilderness waters throughout southern Patagonia, including remote rivers, natural lakes, lagoons, mountain streams, and tributaries. All fishing is conducted by wading on private water. Access to lightly fished private waters is one of the greatest advantages of the Maiten Chubut program. Fish experience very little angling pressure and respond naturally to properly presented flies.
Experienced guides possess years of firsthand knowledge of these waters and use that experience to maximize every day on the river. Wild Brown Trout thrive in cold, demanding habitats and are known for their intelligence, selectivity, strength, and beauty.
Rainbow Trout inhabit the faster sections of the river system, displaying remarkable speed, energy, and acrobatic fights characteristic of truly wild fish. Brook Trout are found in the coldest tributaries and headwater streams draining the higher elevations of the watershed.
November to April
The flagship species of Maiten Lodge Chubut. Wild Brown Trout have developed over decades in cold southern Patagonian rivers, producing selective, powerful, and exceptionally beautiful fish that represent the primary objective for many visiting anglers.
November to April
Rainbow Trout thrive in the faster waters of the Chubut river system. Raised entirely in wild conditions, they are known for their athletic fighting ability and remain available throughout the entire fishing season.
November to February
Brook Trout are among Patagonia’s most visually striking freshwater fish. Found primarily in cold tributaries and headwater streams, they are generally smaller than Brown and Rainbow Trout but display remarkable coloration unlike any other trout species in the collection.
The greatest distinction between Maiten Lodge Chubut and the northern Patagonian properties is its extended season. While Maiten Lodge Neuquén closes in February, Maiten Chubut continues through April, providing access to some of Argentina’s finest late-season fly fishing.
March marks the transition into autumn. Brown Trout are in peak physical condition after feeding throughout the summer, while cooling temperatures increase their aggressiveness. Streamer fishing reaches its seasonal peak as large predatory trout actively feed before winter. At the same time, Patagonia’s lenga beech forests begin displaying brilliant autumn colors.
April continues to produce excellent fishing despite cooler weather. Fish concentrate in predictable feeding areas, and reduced angling pressure leaves the rivers exceptionally quiet. Guides know precisely where to locate productive water during this late-season period.
For anglers with flexible travel schedules or those who have already experienced northern Patagonia, March and April at Maiten Lodge Chubut represent some of the finest trout fishing available anywhere in Argentina.
Dry fly fishing provides one of the most rewarding experiences in southern Patagonia whenever trout actively feed on the surface. Reliable hatches occur throughout November through March, creating memorable evening rises across productive stretches of river. Successful presentations require precise, drag-free drifts while adapting to the stronger and more variable winds characteristic of southern Patagonia. Common productive patterns include: Parachute Adams, Elk hair caddis and attractor patterns in sizes 12–18
Nymphing remains the most consistently productive technique throughout the entire November through April season. Wild Brown and Rainbow Trout spend much of their time feeding below the surface, making properly presented nymphs highly effective across nearly every water type. Fluorocarbon tippet is strongly recommended because of the exceptional water clarity. Common productive nymphs include: pheasant tail, Hare's ear and prince nymph. Sizes 14–18 cover most situations encountered throughout the program.
Streamer fishing targets the largest trout of the season and becomes particularly productive during March and April. Large articulated streamers worked beneath undercut banks and through deep pools consistently attract trophy Brown Trout preparing for winter. Early mornings and overcast conditions generally produce the best results. Recommended streamer patterns include: Buggers, articulated rabbit strip streamers and sculpin patterns. Sizes 4–8 fished on sinking-tip lines produce the most consistent results.
Important: Waders are not available for rental at Maiten Lodge Chubut. Every angler must bring high-quality stockingfoot chest waders that have been thoroughly tested before travel.
Each angler should bring a minimum of two fly rods, with five-weight and six-weight rods covering most fishing situations, while a seven-weight rod is recommended for streamer fishing during March and April. Pack two quality reels with dependable drag systems, spare spools, a weight-forward floating fly line, and a 175–200 grain sinking-tip line for streamer and lake fishing.
Carry nine-foot leaders in 3X, 4X, and 5X, along with 2X through 6X tippet material, with fluorocarbon tippet strongly recommended for improved presentation and durability. A complete assortment of flies, as outlined in the Fly Fishing Gear Guide, is essential. Anglers should also bring quality stockingfoot chest waders, wading boots with felt or Vibram soles that have been thoroughly cleaned before travel, a reliable wading staff for technical river crossings, and polarized sunglasses, with two pairs recommended.
The extended April season requires considerably warmer clothing than northern Patagonia, making proper layering essential for comfort throughout the day. Recommended clothing includes a Gore-Tex rain jacket, windproof fleece jacket, fleece vest, heavyweight thermal base layers for March and April, and medium-weight base layers for November through February.
Pack long-sleeve quick-dry fishing shirts, quick-dry pants, a warm hat, baseball cap, half-finger gloves, and heavyweight gloves for cold April mornings. Personal essentials should include waterproof SPF 50 sunscreen, SPF lip balm, insect repellent, and a camera to capture memorable moments during your fishing adventure.
