THE HUNTING

All Pointer Safari hunts are conducted in the company of experienced professional hunters who know the game, the terrain, and the tracking craft that African hunting demands. The primary hunting method across all five properties is spot and stalk on foot, the most rewarding and most authentic approach to African plains game hunting and the style that separates a genuine safari from a canned shooting operation.

The bushveld country of Limpopo Province is exceptional hunting terrain. Thick mopane and combretum woodland, open plains, rocky outcroppings, and dry riverbeds create a diverse landscape that demands genuine fieldcraft and rewards the hunter who is willing to work for their trophies. Your professional hunter tracks, reads, and positions you throughout every day in the field. Nestled in the bushveld just outside Dwaalboom near Thabazimbi, this comfortable hunting lodge accommodates up to ten guests in five ensuite double rooms, blending the warmth of a traditional African hunting camp with modern lodge comforts. Letlapa Pula Lodge

Limpopo Province, South Africa

Nestled among the trees and rocky hills of Letlapa Pula, this is the most luxurious lodge in the Pointer Safaris collection. The lodge features a master suite with a king-sized bed, a spacious bathroom with indoor and private outdoor showers, and private chalets with decks overlooking the surrounding plains. Located near the banks of the Krokodil River in the fertile thornveld country of Thabazimbi, Kamboo Lodge is an excellent base for both first-time and experienced safari hunters. The lodge accommodates up to eight guests in four ensuite double rooms and offers access to productive plains game habitat guided by experienced professional hunters. Koedoesfontein Game Farm is the largest lodge in the Pointer Safaris collection, accommodating up to fifteen guests in seven comfortable double rooms. GETTING TO SOUTH AFRICA

All five Pointer Safari lodges are accessed via Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport, the primary international gateway to South Africa. Direct flights to Johannesburg operate from Atlanta and Washington Dulles making North American connections straightforward and efficient. From Johannesburg all five lodges are a three and a half to four hour drive depending on traffic and specific lodge location. Our team coordinates all ground transportation from the airport to each property.

South Africa has a well-established process for the temporary importation of hunting firearms that Pointer Safaris guides every client through before travel. The process requires advance documentation including proof of ownership and compliance with South African customs requirements. All five Pointer Safari lodges maintain a comprehensive rental rifle fleet from .270 Winchester through .375 H&H Magnum for hunters who prefer not to import their own firearm.

Trophy Export and CITES

All field preparation, trophy care, and initial processing at the lodge is handled by our professional hunting team at each property. CITES documentation for applicable species and all South African trophy export paperwork is managed by our team alongside established South African taxidermy and shipping partners who specialize in delivering trophies to hunters’ preferred taxidermists in the United States and worldwide. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year for a South African safari?

South Africa offers excellent hunting year round but the dry winter months of May through September are generally considered the prime hunting season. Lower vegetation in the dry season improves visibility significantly, animals concentrate around available water making them more predictable and more accessible, and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable conditions in the field. The shoulder months of April and October also offer excellent hunting. Contact Declan to discuss the optimal timing for the specific species on your list.

Do I need hunting experience to join a Pointer Safari program?

No prior African hunting experience is required. First-time African hunters are genuinely welcome at all five Pointer Safari properties and the professional hunters who guide our programs are experienced instructors who work actively with hunters of all experience levels throughout the program. Kamboo Lodge in particular is an excellent starting point for hunters on their first African safari. Contact Declan and describe your experience level and species goals and we will recommend the right property and program for your situation.

How many species can I hunt on a single program?

Plains game programs typically allow hunters to pursue multiple species across a single stay depending on the agreed program structure and the specific species goals. A standard week-long program with a good professional hunter in productive country can deliver a very satisfying multi-species collection. Can non-hunting companions join the safari?

Absolutely. All five Pointer Safari lodges accommodate non-hunting companions and the quality of the lodge facilities, the cuisine, and the surrounding country make South Africa an outstanding destination for the entire group regardless of whether everyone is hunting. Game drives and non-hunting activities can be arranged for companions through our Beagle International partnership. Let us know how many non-hunting guests are in your group at the time of inquiry and we will build those requirements into the program.

What calibers are available in the rental rifle fleet?

The rental rifle fleet at all five Pointer Safari lodges covers a full range of calibers from .270 Winchester through .375 H&H Magnum including 7mm-08, 7×57 Mauser, .280 Remington, 7mm Magnum, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Magnum, and .338 Winchester Magnum. The .375 H&H Magnum is available for Cape Buffalo and other dangerous game. Hunters planning to pursue dangerous game must confirm caliber availability with Declan before booking.
