Blackbuck Antelope Hunting in Argentina

The Most Visually Spectacular Trophy in Argentina. Open Country. Long Range. Total Alertness.

The blackbuck antelope is unlike any other animal in the Pointer Big Game program. The mature male’s striking black and white body coloration, spiraling horns, and extraordinary speed make it one of the most visually memorable and technically demanding trophy animals available anywhere in South America. Introduced to the Argentine pampa decades ago, the blackbuck has thrived in the open grassland country of La Pampa Province, and the population across the Pointer properties is exceptional in both quality and numbers. For hunters who want a trophy unlike anything else on their wall and a hunting challenge that demands precision shooting across open country, the blackbuck is the perfect choice.

Antilope cervicapra. One of the Most Visually Extraordinary Animals in the World.

About the Blackbuck

The blackbuck antelope, Antilope cervicapra, is native to the Indian subcontinent, where it has been admired for its beauty and speed for thousands of years. Introduced to the Argentine pampa during the twentieth century, it adapted naturally to the open grasslands of La Pampa Province, producing exceptional free-range trophies across the Pointer properties.

The mature male is one of the most visually distinctive animals in the big game world. Fully mature males develop a jet-black upper body that gradually darkens from the tan coloration of younger animals. Their brilliant white underparts, inner legs, muzzle, and eye rings create a striking contrast that makes them instantly recognizable across open country. Their tightly spiraled horns, often displaying four or more twists on quality trophies, complete one of the most remarkable trophy animals any hunter will encounter.

The blackbuck is also among the fastest land animals in the world, capable of reaching speeds approaching 50 miles per hour and maintaining high speeds over long distances. Combined with exceptional eyesight and constant alertness, this speed makes it one of the most technically demanding species in the Argentine program. Success depends upon intelligent use of available cover, careful stalking, and confident first-shot accuracy at extended distances.

Open Country. Alert Animals. Precise Shooting at Distance. The Blackbuck Demands All Three.

About the Hunting

Blackbuck hunting on the La Pampa properties is a true open-country challenge. The animals inhabit broad grasslands where visibility is their greatest defense, making close-range approaches difficult. An alert blackbuck often detects approaching hunters long before they realize they have been seen, responding immediately by fleeing across the open pampa. Understanding this behavior is essential to consistent success. Successful blackbuck hunting combines careful early-morning glassing, intelligent use of natural terrain features, and the patience to wait for high-quality shot opportunities. Professional hunters know where mature males are most consistently found, understand their daily movement patterns, and determine the maximum ethical shooting distance based on each hunter’s demonstrated ability. Shot distances typically range from 150 to 250 yards across the open grasslands. Hunters should arrive with the equipment and confidence necessary to make accurate first shots at these distances. A wounded blackbuck can travel remarkable distances across open country, making precise shot placement the most important skill in the program.

Glassing, Stalking, and Stand Hunting. Three Approaches to the Open Country Blackbuck.

How We Hunt

Glass and Stalk

Glass and stalk is the primary and most technically demanding method of hunting blackbuck. Professional hunters use quality optics from elevated positions and vehicle-based observation points to locate and evaluate mature males before beginning a carefully planned stalk. Every available terrain feature is used to reduce visibility during the approach. Patience, precise footwork, and careful timing are essential, with hunters often stopping whenever the animal focuses its attention toward them. The reward is a clean shot opportunity on one of Argentina’s most spectacular trophies.

Stand Hunting at Feeding Areas

Stand hunting offers a more controlled approach by positioning hunters near known feeding areas, water sources, and travel routes during the early morning and late afternoon. Years of observing blackbuck movement patterns have allowed professional hunters to develop productive stand locations that consistently provide close- to medium-range opportunities, while minimizing disturbance and increasing the likelihood of ethical, well-placed shots on mature trophy animals.

Vehicle-Assisted Approach

In areas where natural cover is limited, a slow and deliberate vehicle-assisted approach allows hunters to close the distance without alarming the animals. Blackbuck often tolerate vehicles more readily than approaching hunters on foot, allowing professional hunters to position clients within practical shooting range before taking a carefully supported shot from a stable position, maximizing accuracy, minimizing unnecessary movement, and improving the chances of a clean, ethical harvest under favorable field conditions.

Caliber Note

Flat-shooting medium calibers such as the 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Winchester, 7mm-08, .308 Winchester, and similar cartridges are ideal for blackbuck hunting.
