Maiten Lodge Chubut is located in the wilderness of southern Patagonia, a region that many fly fishers dream about but few ever experience. Rivers flow cold and clear through landscapes that remain largely unchanged from a century ago, creating an authentic wilderness fishing destination.
The lodge is situated just south of Los Alerces National Park in the heart of one of the most spectacular mountain valleys in Patagonia. Productive trout streams are accessible in every direction from the lodge.
The lodge provides comfortable accommodations while serving as a base for exploring the remote rivers, streams, and lakes that define the program. Guests enjoy genuine Patagonian hospitality together with the service standards found throughout the Pointer collection.
One of the lodge’s defining advantages is its extended November through April season. While northern Patagonian properties conclude their seasons in February, Maiten Lodge Chubut continues through autumn, allowing anglers to experience exceptional fishing during March and April when trout are in outstanding condition and Patagonia transforms into spectacular autumn colors.

Maiten Lodge Chubut is a float fishing only program. All fishing at this lodge is conducted from drift boats and rafts on the rivers and glacial lakes of the Trevelin and Esquel region. There is no walk and wade fishing available at this property.
The fishing program covers a diverse range of wilderness waters throughout southern Patagonia, including remote rivers, natural lakes, lagoons, mountain streams, and tributaries. Access to lightly fished private waters is one of the greatest advantages of the Maiten Chubut program. Fish experience very little angling pressure and respond naturally to properly presented flies.
Experienced guides possess years of firsthand knowledge of these waters and use that experience to maximize every day on the river. Wild Brown Trout thrive in cold, demanding habitats and are known for their intelligence, selectivity, strength, and beauty.
Rainbow Trout inhabit the faster sections of the river system, displaying remarkable speed, energy, and acrobatic fights characteristic of truly wild fish. Brook Trout are found in the coldest tributaries and headwater streams draining the higher elevations of the watershed.
The program is beginner-friendly and can be adapted and adjusted for casting ability.
The southern Patagonia region around the lodge has the largest variety of trout streams available in any single area. Access includes rivers, small creeks, lagoons, and small lakes on private lands with a daily access fee paid for all fishing locations. Some rivers are very technical and are ideal for dry fly fishing with a higher degree of casting difficulty. Others offer unique, calm, and crystal clear water with a different character. The lagoons and small lakes provide a great change of scenery and a completely different fishing experience.
Glacial Lakes, National Park Rivers, and the Rio Grande. The Best Float Fishing in Patagonia.
All fishing at Maiten Lodge Chubut is float fishing. This is a float-only program.
Maiten Lodge Chubut is home base to some of the finest float fishing in all of Patagonia. The most accessible float is the Rio Grande, just 25 minutes from the lodge. This is a larger, slower-moving river with plenty of structure and ample opportunity to catch consistent numbers of quality trout. It is the ideal introduction to float fishing in the Trevelin area for guests who want to ease into the experience before moving to more technical water.
The undisputed highlight of the Maiten Chubut float program is our access to Los Alerces National Park. We float the glacial-fed lakes and rivers that run through the park. The park environment is genuinely extraordinary, temperate Valdivian rainforest surrounding clear glacial water, and the fishing quality within the park reflects the pristine and largely unpressured character of the environment. This is Patagonia at its most spectacular and most intact.
Week-long programs are standard at Maiten Lodge Chubut but trips as short as three days can be designed around your schedule. For anglers wanting a completely custom itinerary, our team can combine the Maiten Chubut program with fishing at other destinations across the Patagonian region. Contact Jazmin to discuss the options available for the current season.
The Trevelin and Esquel region offers a concentration of fishable rivers, spring creeks, and lakes that is genuinely unmatched in the whole of Argentina. From the lodge, productive trout streams are accessible in every direction. The following rivers are among the most celebrated in the program, but they represent only part of what the Maiten Chubut water covers across a full week in the area.
Rio Grande
The most accessible float river in the program and just 25 minutes from the lodge. A larger, slower-moving river with significant structure and excellent habitat for consistent numbers of quality rainbow and brown trout. The ideal starting point for float fishing days and a reliable producer throughout the season.
Rio Corintos
One of the tributary rivers accessible from the lodge with its own distinct character and fishing opportunities. Contact Jazmin for current program details and seasonal availability on the Corintos.
Rio Rivadavia
Flows through the Los Alerces National Park territory accessible from Maiten Lodge Chubut. The park section delivers the pristine glacial water environment for which Patagonia is internationally known.
Arroyo Pescado
A spring creek favored by guests specifically for dry fly fishing. One of the most technically rewarding pieces of water in the regional river network with consistently high numbers of fish available in a setting that rewards careful presentation and precise casting.
Rio Tecka
Part of the extended river network accessible from Maiten Lodge Chubut. Contact Jazmin for current program details and availability.
Rio Corcovado
Another celebrated Patagonian river within the Maiten Chubut program. Contact Jazmin for current program details and seasonal fishing conditions.
Rio Gualjaina
A spring creek environment alongside the Arroyo Pescado as one of the regional river network’s most popular dry fly destinations. Known for consistent fish numbers in a technically engaging spring creek setting.
And Many Others
The Trevelin and Esquel region holds over two dozen rivers within striking distance of the lodge. The rivers listed above represent our most well-known and most frequently fished water. Our guides rotate through the full river portfolio based on current conditions, rested water rotation, and guest preferences throughout each week-long program.
November to April
Golden in color, with a generally brown back, silvery sides, and a yellowish belly. It has orange spots along its sides and very noticeable dark spots surrounded by a slightly lighter halo.
November to April
Its back is olive green, while its sides are silvery, becoming white toward the belly. It has rounded black spots covering most of its body, particularly along the back.
November to February
Its back is olive green with yellow worm-like markings. The pectoral, pelvic, anal, and caudal fins have white leading edges bordered in black. Its sides feature red spots, often surrounded by a bluish halo.
The greatest distinction between Maiten Lodge Chubut and the northern Patagonian properties is its extended season. While Maiten Lodge Neuquén closes in February, Maiten Chubut continues through April, providing access to some of Argentina’s finest late-season fly fishing.
March marks the transition into autumn. Brown Trout are in peak physical condition after feeding throughout the summer, while cooling temperatures increase their aggressiveness. Streamer fishing reaches its seasonal peak as large predatory trout actively feed before winter. At the same time, Patagonia’s lenga beech forests begin displaying brilliant autumn colors.
April continues to produce excellent fishing despite cooler weather. Fish concentrate in predictable feeding areas, and reduced angling pressure leaves the rivers exceptionally quiet. Guides know precisely where to locate productive water during this late-season period.
For anglers with flexible travel schedules or those who have already experienced northern Patagonia, March and April at Maiten Lodge Chubut represent some of the finest trout fishing available anywhere in Argentina.
Dry fly fishing provides one of the most rewarding experiences in southern Patagonia whenever trout actively feed on the surface. Reliable hatches occur throughout November through March, creating memorable evening rises across productive stretches of river. Successful presentations require precise, drag-free drifts while adapting to the stronger and more variable winds characteristic of southern Patagonia. Common productive patterns include: Parachute Adams, Elk hair caddis and attractor patterns in sizes 12–18
Nymphing remains the most consistently productive technique throughout the entire November through April season. Wild Brown and Rainbow Trout spend much of their time feeding below the surface, making properly presented nymphs highly effective across nearly every water type. Fluorocarbon tippet is strongly recommended because of the exceptional water clarity. Common productive nymphs include: pheasant tail, Hare's ear and prince nymph. Sizes 14–18 cover most situations encountered throughout the program.
Streamer fishing targets the largest trout of the season and becomes particularly productive during March and April. Large articulated streamers worked beneath undercut banks and through deep pools consistently attract trophy Brown Trout preparing for winter. Early mornings and overcast conditions generally produce the best results. Recommended streamer patterns include: Buggers, articulated rabbit strip streamers and sculpin patterns. Sizes 4–8 fished on sinking-tip lines produce the most consistent results.
Maiten Lodge Chubut is a float fishing only program. Waders are not required for the Maiten Chubut program.
Each angler should bring a minimum of two fly rods, with five-weight and six-weight rods covering most fishing situations, while a seven-weight rod is recommended for streamer fishing during March and April. Pack two quality reels with dependable drag systems, spare spools, a weight-forward floating fly line, and a 175–200 grain sinking-tip line for streamer and lake fishing.
Carry nine-foot leaders in 3X, 4X, and 5X, along with 2X through 6X tippet material, with fluorocarbon tippet strongly recommended for improved presentation and durability. A complete assortment of flies, as outlined in the Fly Fishing Gear Guide, is essential. Anglers should also bring polarized sunglasses, with two pairs recommended. Waders are not required for this float-only program.
The extended April season requires considerably warmer clothing than northern Patagonia, making proper layering essential for comfort throughout the day. Recommended clothing includes a Gore-Tex rain jacket, windproof fleece jacket, fleece vest, heavyweight thermal base layers for March and April, and medium-weight base layers for November through February.
Pack long-sleeve quick-dry fishing shirts, quick-dry pants, a warm hat, baseball cap, half-finger gloves, and heavyweight gloves for cold April mornings. Personal essentials should include waterproof SPF 50 sunscreen, SPF lip balm, insect repellent, and a camera to capture memorable moments during your fishing adventure.
