The Fishing

Exclusive Access to Fernández Lagoon. Golden Dorado in the Heart of the Iberá Wetlands.

Uguay Lodge provides exclusive access to Fernández Lagoon through the lodge’s private channel, reaching untouched waters where Golden Dorado and wildlife exist in complete harmony. This is one of the most pristine Golden Dorado environments accessible through the Pointer Fly Fishing program and the private channel access ensures that guests are fishing water that has not been pressured by other operations.

The program is beginner-friendly and can be adapted for guests interested in learning or combining fly fishing and spin casting techniques. Whether you are an experienced fly fisher targeting the Dorado on large streamers or a first-time visitor discovering this extraordinary fish for the first time, the guides at Uguay have the knowledge and patience to make every session on the water genuinely productive.

The Golden Dorado is one of the most remarkable freshwater game fish in the world. A large head with powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth, extraordinary golden coloration, and a fighting character defined by explosive runs, high jumps, and tarpon-like acrobatics. Average size ranges from 3 to 10 kilograms with the largest recorded specimens reaching 31 kilograms. The Dorado lives in warm freshwater habitats and feeds aggressively on schooling prey fish, particularly the sabalo. Its aggressive nature, stamina, and visual spectacle in the air have made it one of the most sought-after freshwater fly fishing targets in South America.

Wire Tippet — Mandatory on Every Single Fly Without Exception

Wire tippet is required on every fly at Uguay Lodge without exception. Stainless steel knottable wire, minimum 8 inches in length and 15 to 30 pound test strength. The Golden Dorado's teeth cut monofilament on the first contact every time. This applies to every fly, every session, every day of the program. See the Gear and Equipment section below for full specifications.

The Cuisine

Argentine and International Cuisine by a Professional Chef. Every Evening.

Our professional chef works passionately every day to delight guests with Argentine and international dishes alongside fine Argentine wines. The menu draws inspiration from Italian and Spanish culinary traditions alongside ingredients from the Andean northwest and Patagonia, creating a table that reflects the full breadth of Argentina’s extraordinary culinary heritage.

Expect exceptional steaks, stellar ice cream, mouthwatering pastas, and dozens of other savory preparations alongside the asado, one of Argentina’s most important culinary traditions and a centerpiece of every evening at Uguay. Special appetizers and drinks before dinner, regional desserts after every meal, and the famous Argentine dulce de leche at every sitting. Special dietary requests are always accommodated.

The Iberá Wetlands

One of South America's Great Wild Places. The Fishing Is Extraordinary. The Wildlife Is Unforgettable.

The Iberá Wetlands cover approximately 13,000 square kilometers in Corrientes Province making them one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the world and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in South America. Uguay Lodge sits within the private Guasú-kua Nature Reserve on the edge of this extraordinary landscape, surrounded by more than 150 acres of protected native forest, grasslands, and marshes.

The wildlife encountered from the lodge and from the fishing boats is genuinely remarkable. Yacaré caimans on the banks of the private channel. Capybaras in the marsh grass. Marsh deer moving through the native forest. An extraordinary diversity of bird species including jabiru storks, roseate spoonbills, and the full range of wetland birds that make Corrientes one of the most celebrated birdwatching destinations in South America.

This is not background scenery. The wildlife of the Iberá Wetlands is one of the defining elements of the Uguay experience and anglers who arrive focused entirely on the fishing consistently leave equally moved by the natural world surrounding them on every boat ride to and from the fishing grounds.

Gear and Equipment

The Same Requirements as Any Golden Dorado Program. Wire on Every Fly Without Exception.

The gear requirements at Uguay Lodge are identical to those at San Javier Lodge and Posada Uguay. The full gear guide for Golden Dorado fishing is available on the Fly Fishing Gear and Equipment page. Key requirements are summarized here.

Lines

Tropical fly lines required. One floating line and one clear or sinking tip line. Standard trout lines will not perform adequately in the subtropical conditions of the Iberá Wetlands.

Leaders and Wire

Nine-foot leaders finishing at minimum 20 to 30 pound test. Stainless steel knottable wire on every fly, minimum 8 inches, 15 to 30 pound test. Mandatory without exception. See the wire tippet callout box in The Fishing section above.

Flies

Two dozen Dorado streamers in various patterns. Sizes mostly 3/0 with a few 4/0 and a few smaller 2s. Heavy lead eyes and bead chain eyes. Getting Here

Esteros del Iberá, Corrientes Province | Corrientes Airport CNQ or Posadas

Most international flights to Argentina land in Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport EZE. Upon arrival at Ezeiza you will need to clear customs and transfer to Jorge Newbery Airfield AEP for your domestic connection. Allow at least three to four hours between your international arrival and domestic departure. The transfer between the two airports typically takes 30 to 50 minutes but can take up to one hour in traffic. Our team organizes private ground transfers and hotel reservations in Buenos Aires for guests who need them.

The final destination is the Esteros del Iberá in Corrientes Province. Domestic connection options are Corrientes Airport CNQ or Libertador General José de San Martín Airport in Posadas, Misiones. Private charter flights are also available. Contact Jazmin for current routing guidance and to request a private charter quote specific to your travel dates. There will always be a member of our team waiting at the airport to drive you directly to the lodge.

Best International Airlines Into Buenos Aires: Delta via Atlanta, United non-stop from the US approximately 10 hours, American Airlines via Miami or Dallas. Also LATAM and Aerolíneas Argentinas.

Important: If flying LATAM make sure your connection is through Miami and not Santiago de Chile. The Santiago routing takes significantly longer.
