The European mouflon is one of the most ancient and distinctive wild sheep available to hunters anywhere in the world. With a lineage stretching back to the earliest domestic sheep of the Neolithic period, it is immediately recognizable by its full-curl horns, rich reddish-brown coat, and pale saddle patch. The European mouflon, Ovis aries musimon, is considered one of the wild ancestors of modern domestic sheep. Native to Corsica and Sardinia, it has been successfully introduced to hunting estates throughout the world, including the free-range populations of Argentina’s La Pampa Province.
Mature rams are striking animals with rich reddish-brown coats that darken during winter, highlighted by the species’ signature pale saddle patch. Cream-colored underparts and a darker facial mask complete one of the most recognizable appearances among wild sheep.
The defining trophy feature is the horn. Mature rams develop heavy horns that curl into a tight spiral, with a full-curl ram regarded as the benchmark trophy.
Although smaller than many deer species, the mouflon is muscular, agile, and exceptionally alert, relying on keen eyesight to detect danger across open country.
European mouflon hunting in La Pampa centers on open grasslands and lightly wooded terrain where rams depend primarily on vision rather than scent or hearing. Success begins with careful glassing to locate and evaluate mature rams before planning a deliberate stalk using folds in the terrain for concealment. Professional hunters assess horn curl, horn mass, and symmetry before committing to an approach. Their knowledge of the estate allows them to consistently locate quality full-curl trophy animals. Typical shot distances range from approximately 100 to 200 yards, making flat-shooting deer calibers and confident field marksmanship ideal for this hunt.
The mouflon rut occurs during May and June, extending Argentina’s big-game rutting season beyond both the red stag and fallow deer. During this period mature rams become increasingly active, travel greater distances in search of ewes, and generally become less cautious than at other times of the season. Unlike the dramatic vocal displays of red stag and fallow deer, mouflon breeding behavior is quieter and relies more on visual interaction between competing rams. For hunters visiting during late autumn and early winter, the combination of mouflon in rut alongside post-rut fallow deer and prime wild boar creates one of the most rewarding multi-species programs available.
This is the primary method throughout the season. Professional hunters use quality optics from elevated positions and vehicle-based observation points to locate mature rams before beginning a careful foot stalk that uses natural terrain to remain concealed until an ethical shooting opportunity presents itself.
Where vegetation offers little natural cover, a slow and carefully managed vehicle approach allows hunters to close the distance without alarming animals accustomed to non-threatening vehicles. Once within range, the hunter shoots from a stable supported position under the guidance of the professional hunter.

Pack camouflage or earth-tone clothing, warm base layers, waterproof leather boots with ankle support and Vibram soles, quality 10×42 binoculars, shooting sticks or a lightweight bipod, ear protection, a small daypack, water, energy snacks, a rain jacket, and a camera.
Comfortable casual clothing is recommended, along with a warm layer for cool evenings.
