The moment you enter La Plata Lodge, the natural stream running past the entrance sets the tone for the entire experience. One master suite and three spacious double suites, each with private bathrooms and individual design elements, provide a comfortable retreat after long days in the field.
Warm days and crisp nights define the hunting season, while exceptionally clear skies reveal the Milky Way from the lodge verandas in a way few destinations can match. Each evening guests gather around the fireplace before enjoying gourmet cuisine prepared by the lodge’s professional chef.
The Paraguayan Chaco is a dry and arid natural environment that feels completely unlike any other Pointer hunting destination. This is a landscape of rocky hills, dramatic topography, and the characteristic waist-high thorny bush that defines the Chaco throughout the hunting season. It is demanding terrain to move through and that physical challenge is part of what makes the La Plata hunting experience feel genuinely different from the blind-based dove shooting of the Argentine Sierras or the flat agricultural fields of Buenos Aires Province.
Seventy percent of the hunting at La Plata is conducted in the hills, working through the rocks and thorny bush with the guides to reach productive positions as the birds fly over the terrain. The remaining thirty percent is in the plains where agricultural fields with crops and low cut grasses concentrate feeding birds in the flatter Chaco country. Both environments require appropriate footwear with ankle support due to the rocky ground and the thorny vegetation that characterizes the area.
The birds leave the roosting sites at first light and fly forty to sixty miles on average to feed, which means the action begins immediately and runs hard through the morning session. A tent is set up in the field for the traditional Argentine barbecue at midday with Malbec wine, followed by hammocks for the siesta before the afternoon session. The Chaco at midday in June and July has a particular quality of dry winter light that makes the landscape look and feel unlike anything in the southern cone and the afternoon session hunting through this light back toward the lodge is an experience guests consistently describe as genuinely memorable.
The hunting program at La Plata Lodge follows the proven Pointer structure while embracing the unique conditions of the Chaco. Breakfast includes fruit, cereal, toast, coffee, and eggs prepared to order before guides provide a briefing on field locations, firearms, and ammunition. Following the safety orientation, guests depart for the field, usually within a twenty to forty-minute drive.
Your field assistant remains in position throughout the hunt, managing firearms, ammunition, bird counts, and all field logistics so that your focus remains entirely on shooting. After the morning session, guests enjoy a traditional field barbecue with Malbec wine and a relaxing siesta before returning to the field for the afternoon hunt. The combination of hill-country shooting and agricultural field hunting creates a varied and engaging experience that remains exciting throughout the stay.
The La Plata Lodge season runs from June through September, coinciding with the dry season and South American winter. This period offers clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures, and crisp evenings that make the Chaco particularly enjoyable. The region’s famous dry-season light gives the landscape remarkable character, while cold nights create the perfect atmosphere for evenings around the fireplace. The June-to-September season also aligns perfectly with many Argentine hunting programs, making it easy to combine a Paraguay adventure with dove, duck, or big-game hunting elsewhere in the Pointer collection.
After a day in the Chaco hills and plains, guests return to cold drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and the warmth of the lodge before enjoying an exceptional dining experience. The professional chef prepares gourmet and traditional cuisine using outstanding local ingredients and international culinary influences.
The signature culinary experience is goat or lamb a la cruz, slow-cooked over an open fire for several hours until the meat becomes exceptionally tender and flavorful. It remains one of the most celebrated dishes throughout the Pointer collection. Special appetizers, premium wines, and a fully stocked open bar complement every meal, while dulce de leche provides a classic finish to the evening.
La Plata Lodge operates Pointer’s two-gun-per-hunter policy at every blind. Should a firearm malfunction, your field assistant immediately exchanges it to ensure uninterrupted shooting. All firearms are cleaned and maintained regularly. Most guns are equipped with modified or improved-cylinder chokes. Guests with specific preferences should notify the team before arrival.
A premium gun fleet is available, featuring Benelli and Beretta semi-automatic shotguns, Beretta Silver Pigeon over-and-unders in 20 and 28 gauge, and the Browning 525 .410.
The Paraguayan Chaco features rocky ground and extensive thorny vegetation. Quality ankle support and Gore-Tex footwear are strongly recommended.
