The eared dove, Zenaida auriculata, nests in extraordinary numbers across the agricultural heartland of Argentina in a way that has no parallel anywhere else on earth. The combination of vast grain crops, feedlots, water sources, and the year-round breeding cycle of this particular species creates populations, in one of the in the tens of millions across a single province. The Eared Dove

The eared dove is smaller, faster, and more agile in flight than the mourning dove most North American hunters are familiar with and that difference is immediately apparent on the first morning in the field. These are not birds that float gently into range. They come in fast, change direction without warning, and present angles that demand genuine shooting skill and a committed follow-through to convert consistently. Accuracy rates below fifty percent are common for experienced shooters on their first Argentine dove session and rates below thirty percent are not embarrassing. By the end of a four-day program most hunters have recalibrated completely and the improvement in shooting is measurable and deeply satisfying.

The eared dove is also one of the most prolific breeders in the bird world, capable of producing multiple clutches per year under favorable conditions, which is why Argentine populations have remained extraordinary despite the pressure of legal sport hunting. The agricultural landscape of the Argentine interior provides an essentially unlimited food supply and the warm climate enables year-round breeding in most provinces. This is not a fragile resource that hunting depletes. CÓRDOBA PROVINCE

The heart of the Pointer dove hunting program and the most famous bird hunting province in the world. Three lodges—Casablanca, San Huberto, and pequaños La Loma—each occupy a different territory within the southern Córdoba dove country where the Sierras and surrounding terrain produce the most challenging and most rewarding shooting in the program. Seventy percent of the time we hunt the rolling hills and rocky draws filled with eared high thirty birds where birds fly over from multiple angles. The remaining thirty percent is flatland shooting over harvested crop fields and feedlots. Field rates of two to forty months depending on the lodge. Fifty plus million bird regional population. Year round season.

SAN LUIS PROVINCE

San Luis has emerged alongside Córdoba as one of Argentina’s premier dove provinces and the San Luis Lodge and Resort gives our guests access to exceptional dove country near the Comechingones Mountains with the most resort-quality lodging in the entire Pointer Wing Shooting collection. Feedlots, dove groves, sunflower fields, peanut crops, and corn attract birds in extraordinary concentrations throughout the year. Year round season.

TUCUMÁN PROVINCE

La Salamanca Lodge in the Arts Valley of Tucumán Province represents the most culturally distinct and geographically unique dove hunting destination in the Pointer collection. The fertile agricultural landscape the of the valley, dominated by wheat, sorghum, soybeans, corn corn pomelo, supports exceptional dove populations alongside pigeon concentrations that are available at no other Pointer wing shooting lodge. The northern Argentine culinary traditions including clay oven empanadas, humitas en chala, and ofrengues give the La Salamanca program a cultural richness that sets it completely apart. Year round season.

SANTA FE PROVINCE

The Santa Fe lodges, San Javier and Sirirí, offer dove hunting as part of the mixed bag program and the Cast and Blast combination during the shoulder seasons. Dove populations in the Santa Fe roosting areas north of the lodges number over twenty million birds. The flatland terrain here produces different shooting presentations from the Córdoba Sierras, with more high incoming and crossing angles, and the combination of dove shooting with duck hunting and perdiz on the same four-night program makes Santa Fe one of the most versatile programs in the collection. Dove season September to April at both lodges.

URUGUAY AND PARAGUAY

San Jose Lodge in Uruguay and La Plata Lodge in Paraguay represent the international reach of the Pointer dove program. San Jose offers year round dove shooting as part of its four species mixed bag program in the Lavalleja Department, a genuinely different country and a genuinely different hunting environment from Argentina. La Plata Lodge in the Paraguayan Chaco delivers extraordinary dove shooting is one of the most distant and remote concentrations, in the entire Pointer collection, with full country shooting through really terrain and thirty bush that feels completely unlike any Argentine dove program. Season June to September at La Plata.

A Day in the Pointer Dove Fields. From First Light to Last Shot.

The Daily Program

Every Pointer dove hunting day follows a rhythm that has been refined over twenty years of running the finest dove shooting program in Argentina. Your guide meets the group at breakfast to brief the day’s field location, the guns being used, and the shells. Questions are answered, the safety briefing is delivered on day one, and by eight to eight thirty the group departs for the field. Field rides range from ten minutes at Estancia La Loma, where the lodge sits between the two largest roosts in Córdoba, to forty minutes at lodges further from the primary roosting areas.

At the blind your personal field assistant is already in position. Shells are counted and organized, guns are ready, the blind is prepared. The birds left the roost at first light and have been flying to their feeding areas since dawn. When you arrive at your position you go straight to work. Three hours of shooting before the midday Argentine asado is prepared at the field tent. Choice cuts of Argentine beef grilled over open fire, Malbec wine, conversation among the group about the morning’s shooting, and hammocks set in the shade for the siesta that follows. The afternoon session begins around three o’clock as birds begin returning toward the roost and the final two hours of the day can be the most intense shooting of the entire program.

Your field assistant loads your guns, maintains the rotation of the two-gun-per-blind policy throughout the day, tracks your bird and shell counts, keeps cold drinks coming, and handles all field work so that your focus stays entirely on the birds in the air from the first shot to the last.

THE FIVE FIELD TYPES

FLYWAYS

The most traditional and consistently productive field type across all Pointer dove and lush velvet over the shooting areas and feeding fields the concentrations daily routine operation that most experience day shooting birds on the heavy every night, the highest where eared the most variety of angles at any 8:00 tiger and its available year round across all provinces.

CROP FIELDS

Harvested soy, corn, sorghum, and sunflower fields attract enormous concentrations of feeding birds. Birds work the field in the morning and again in the afternoon before returning to roost. Best from March through May in Córdoba and year round in San Luis and Tucumán.

FEEDLOTS

Large cattle feedlot operations provide year-round feeding concentrations and some of the most extraordinary bird numbers available in any single location. Best from March through July across the landscape and San Luis hunting regions.

WATER HOLES

During the hot summer months birds concentrate heavily around available water sources creating productive shooting during the dry periods when crop fields and feedlots are less active. Best from October through April in Córdoba.

OLIVE GROVES

Olive production areas in Córdoba and San Luis attract birds during certain periods of the production cycle producing excellent and atmospheric shooting in a landscape unlike any other field type in the program.

TEMPORARY ROOSTING FIELDS

During high and peak population periods birds form secondary roosting concentrations in addition to the primary roosts, creating shooting opportunities in both directions as birds move another concentrating the primary roosts populations, Available seasonally based on field intelligence from our scout team.

OUR FIELD INTELLIGENCE OPERATION

The difference between good dove hunting and extraordinary dove shooting is Argentina comes down entirely to field intelligence. The basis is an arrangement. Finding the best concentrations on any given day requires a dedicated scouting operation whose entire job is exactly that.

Pointer Wing Shooting employs five dedicated field scouts working daily across Córdoba, San Luis, Tucumán, Santa Fe, and our Santa Fe lodges and Paraguay. THE TWO-GUN POLICY

Every hunter at every Pointer Wing Shooting blind has two guns. Your personal field assistant manages both throughout the day. If either gun jams or misfires the assistant immediately swaps it out and takes the malfunctioning gun to the field camp for service without a moment of lost shooting time. The two-gun policy was established because the volume of shooting in Argentine dove hunting puts more rounds through a gun in a single day than most shotguns will see in years of normal use. Equipment issues are not common but they are inevitable at this volume and our policy ensures they never interrupt your hunt. All guns are cleaned and serviced once daily. This policy applies to every blind at every Pointer lodge without exception.

Every Pointer dove hunting program is built around the Argentine table as deliberately as it is built around the fields. The midday asado prepared at the field tent, Argentine beef cuts grilled over open fire alongside Malbec wine and conversation between hunters who have just shared three hours of extraordinary shooting together, is one of the great communal eating experiences available anywhere in the world.

The evening meal at the lodge prepared by a professional chef delivers the full range of Argentine and regional cuisine every night, from the Cordobés goat a la cruz slow-cooked for three hours over an open fire at the Córdoba and San Luis lodges, to the dove tempura and mushroom risotto with chimichurri dove that have become signature preparations across the collection, to the clay oven empanadas, humitas en chala, and ancient northern confections at La Salamanca in Tucumán.

Shell counts and bird counts vary by field, season, and shooting ability. Most guests shoot between two hundred and five hundred shells per day during a standard program. First-time Argentine hunters typically see their accuracy improve significantly from day one to day four as they adjust to the speed and unpredictability of the eared dove. What matters more than the count is the quality and consistency of the experience and Pointer’s field intelligence operation is specifically designed to maximize both.

No. Pointer Wing Shooting welcomes hunters of all experience levels from complete beginners to competitive sporting clays shooters. Our head guides are experienced instructors who will coach your shooting on day one and provide specific adjustments throughout the program if you want them. The eared dove is a challenging target for everyone and the improvement most guests experience across a four-day program is one of the most satisfying aspects of the trip.

A standard program includes four nights at the lodge and approximately three and a half days of shooting, though guests who want more time in the field are always welcome to stay longer if availability allows. All gear, guns, shells, and field equipment are provided. Full meals at the lodge and the midday field asado are included. Guide and field assistant service throughout every session is included.

Yes. Many guests choose to bring their own shotgun and our team can advise on the import process and documentation required for bringing a firearm into Argentina. Twenty gauge is the recommended gauge across all Pointer dove lodges though twelve gauge guns are also available in the rental fleet. If you are bringing your own gun please advise our team in advance so we can prepare the documentation guidance specific to your situation.
