The Golden Dorado is the apex predator of the middle and upper Parana River system and its entire physiology reflects that role. The body is powerful and streamlined. The scales are brilliant gold to reddish-gold, particularly intense on large fish. The wide jaw is filled with sharp interlocking teeth designed to impale the baitfish it hunts, and the reddish-orange fins of a large mature specimen make it one of the most striking freshwater fish in the world. Average fish at Pointer properties range from six to twenty pounds. Trophy specimens exceeding twenty-five and thirty pounds are genuinely available, particularly during the warmer months when fish are feeding most aggressively. It is a territorial predator that uses current seams, bank structure, and depth changes as ambush positions. Bring rods and reels appropriate to your chosen method, wire leaders with a minimum length of fifteen inches and twenty to thirty pound test, a selection of surface plugs, jerkbaits, and swimbaits for spin fishing, Dorado fly patterns including Clouser patterns, Andino Deceivers, and poppers for fly fishing, spare spools and extra line, needle-nose pliers for hook removal, and polarized sunglasses for sight fishing.
