Four nights at San Javier or Siriri Lodge in the heart of the Parana River waterfowl territory combining duck hunting on the marshlands, dove shooting across the agricultural fields north of the lodge, and perdiz walked up behind pointing dogs in the natural grass fields. Three completely different hunting environments, three completely different techniques, one exceptional property in the heart of one of the most productive bird hunting territories in South America.
The most exciting shoulder season combination in the Pointer Wing Shooting program. High-volume dove shooting in the morning followed by Golden Dorado fly fishing or spin fishing on the Parana River system in the afternoon. The Dorado, one of the most powerful and explosive freshwater fish in the world, provides an afternoon program that is as thrilling in its own right as the dove shooting that preceded it. The Cast and Blast is available at both San Javier and Siriri Lodge during the shoulder seasons of March and April and September through December when the duck hunting season has closed but the dove populations remain at full strength and the Golden Dorado in the Parana River system are actively feeding. It is one of the most uniquely Argentine sporting combinations available anywhere in the world and once hunters experience it they consistently describe it as one of the most satisfying single-day sporting experiences of their lives. The morning follows the standard Pointer dove program. Guide briefing at breakfast, departure to the field by eight thirty, three hours of high-volume dove shooting with a field assistant managing everything, the Argentine asado and Malbec at the field camp at midday, hammocks for the siesta. Then the afternoon belongs to the river. The Golden Dorado that inhabit the Parana River channels surrounding both lodges are exceptional fish known for their explosive runs, tarpon-like acrobatics, and ferocious fighting character. They are available on fly gear or spin gear depending on the angler’s preference and experience level and our guides are fully proficient with both approaches. A morning of shooting five hundred doves followed by an afternoon fighting Dorado in the Parana current is a day in Argentina that is genuinely very difficult to improve upon. At San Javier Lodge the Cast and Blast also connects to the standalone Golden Dorado fly fishing program that the lodge operates from September through April with dedicated fly fishing guides and rates built around a four-night five-fishing-day program. San Javier is one of the premier Golden Dorado fly fishing destinations in the world and guests who come for the Cast and Blast frequently extend their stay to fish the full program.
San Jose Lodge in the Lavalleja Department of Uruguay is in a category entirely its own within the Pointer Wing Shooting collection. No other property delivers four completely different wing shooting species from a single base across a single program and the breadth of variety that this creates across a four or five day stay is unlike anything available from any other outfitter operating in South America. The four species at San Jose have their own distinct seasonal windows that overlap in different combinations across the hunting calendar. From May through July all four species are simultaneously available, duck, dove, perdiz, and pigeon, which represents the peak mixed bag window at the lodge. From January through April the dove and pigeon combination is available without the duck and perdiz programs. From August through September ducks and doves can be combined as the perdiz and pigeon seasons close.

One of the genuinely underappreciated aspects of the Pointer mixed bag program is how much the culinary experience varies across the three primary properties. Each lodge draws on a distinct regional food tradition that reflects its geography and its culture in a way that makes the table a genuine part of the mixed bag experience rather than simply a backdrop to the hunting.
At San Javier Lodge the kitchen draws on the Central-East Argentine tradition where the Parana River provides Dorado and Surubi prepared with techniques that honor the freshness of the fish, and game from the field, duck in wild herb butter, pigeon milanesa, and partridge escabeche, reflects the diversity of the hunting program on the plate every evening.
At Siriri the same Central-East culinary tradition applies with the river fish and game preparations of the Santa Fe region at the center of every menu and the Argentine asado fires always burning through the evening.
At San Jose Lodge in Uruguay the table shifts to a Uruguayan character built around fresh local ingredients. Dove sandwiches and hare tenderloin on arrival, perdiz and duck in crepes and pies for dinner, Uruguay’s renowned dulce de leche closing every meal. Argentine and Uruguayan wines across the full stay with Pinot, Malbec, and Merlot from both sides of the Rio de la Plata.
The midday field asado with Malbec wine is the universal constant across all three mixed bag properties. It is one of the things about the Pointer program that guests mention most consistently as a defining memory and it appears in every session of every mixed bag program regardless of which lodge or which country the hunt is taking place in.
The mixed bag program requires gear for multiple hunting styles simultaneously and packing for it requires a little more thought than a single-species program. The following covers all three mixed bag programs across all three properties.
Casual slacks and sport shirts are all you need in the evenings at all three mixed bag properties.
Chest waders or hip waders, waterproof insulated shooting gloves, insulated jacket, polar neck, full-season headwear with hinged facemask, high-bulk thermal socks, ear protection, camera, rain jacket. Wader rentals available at all three lodges. Confirm sizing when booking.
Hunting shirt in green or brown tones, lightweight ankle boots, safety glasses, quality ear protection, wide-brimmed hat, shooting gloves, shoulder pad, small field bag, insect repellent and sunscreen, rain jacket.
Same as dove but comfortable broken-in boots are even more important given the walking distances involved. Do not bring new boots to a perdiz program.
Same as dove but camouflage is strongly recommended over standard hunting colors as concealment matters significantly more in the pigeon program.
