More demanding than the dove program, more technical than anything most visiting hunters have encountered before, and genuinely thrilling when the blind is right and the decoys are working and a flock of Picazuro commits from altitude and comes in hard. Pointer Wing Shooting offers pigeon hunting across four properties spanning Tucumán, San Luis, Uruguay, and Paraguay, each one delivering a completely distinct environment and a completely distinct style of hunting.
The two primary pigeon species hunted across Pointer properties are the Picazuro Pigeon (Patagioenas picazuro) and the Spot-winged Pigeon (Patagioenas maculosa). Both species are considerably larger, stronger in flight, and far more cautious than the Eared Dove.
Pigeons quickly detect movement, exposed faces, or even the reflection of sunlight from a shotgun. Success depends on complete concealment, disciplined movement, and properly constructed blinds.
Unlike dove hunting, where birds are abundant across much of the hunting territory, pigeon concentrations are highly dependent on location and seasonal conditions. Locating productive fields requires experienced guides with detailed knowledge of local bird movement.
When birds are located, blinds are perfectly concealed, and decoys are positioned correctly, pigeon hunting becomes one of the most rewarding shooting experiences in South America.
Picazuro Pigeons are recognized by their distinctive white markings on the back of the neck, while Spot-winged Pigeons display characteristic wing markings visible during flight. Both species feed heavily around agricultural areas including olive groves, sunflower fields, peanut fields, corn, and other grain crops found throughout the hunting regions.
A pigeon hunt operates on a different tempo from a dove hunt. Where dove shooting is fast, loud, and relentless, pigeon hunting rewards patience and careful preparation. The difference begins before the first shot.
Blind construction and concealment are taken seriously at every Pointer pigeon field. Our guides build and cover each blind using native brush, tree limbs, and vegetation from the surrounding area or deploy purpose-built camouflage blinds depending on the terrain. Every surface that could catch the eye of an incoming bird is considered and addressed. Decoys play a critical role that has no real equivalent in the dove program. Robotic pigeons with moving wings, carousel decoys with multiple birds circling a central mount, and static decoys positioned naturally on the ground all help draw birds into range that might otherwise pass well beyond shooting distance.
Once the blind is set and the decoys are placed the shooting demands everything in a hunter’s technique. Pigeons approach with purpose and will flare at the slightest indication that something is wrong. A clean gun mount, a smooth swing, and a committed follow-through are required for consistent results. Our guides and field assistants are experienced coaches who actively help hunters through the specific adjustments that pigeon hunting requires. The most important adjustment is tempo. Pigeons are fast and deliberate and the tendency to rush that works adequately on dove produces far more misses on pigeon.
The midday Argentine asado in the field at lunchtime is unchanged from the dove program and the afternoon session begins around three as birds resume feeding activity toward the evening.
The Anta Valley is one of Argentina’s most productive pigeon hunting regions. Extensive wheat, sorghum, soybean, corn, and peanut fields support healthy populations of both Eared Dove and large pigeons throughout the year.

The dry, rocky terrain of the Paraguayan Chaco creates an entirely different hunting environment from Argentina’s agricultural regions. Dove and pigeon hunting are combined across rocky hills, thorny bush, and open plains.

The primary and most productive approach across all four Pointer pigeon properties. The guide constructs a blind using local materials that disappears completely into the surrounding terrain, positions the decoy spread to maximize its visibility from approaching birds, and positions the hunters inside the blind well before the first birds are expected. Complete stillness is required once the blind is set. Pigeons that commit to the spread come in with focus and purpose and any movement or glint of light will flare them before they come into range. When the approach is correct the birds arrive with the speed and commitment that makes pigeon hunting so genuinely exciting.
At San Jose Lodge in Uruguay and at certain positions across the La Salamanca program, pigeons can be intercepted on predictable daily flight routes between their roosting areas and primary feeding grounds. This approach has more in common with the Córdoba dove flyway shooting in basic concept but the birds demand the same level of concealment and the same deliberate shooting technique as the blind and decoy program. Flight line positions are identified by the guides based on daily observation and positioned carefully to intercept the maximum number of birds without spooking the approach.
At La Salamanca in Tucumán and La Plata in Paraguay the dove and pigeon programs are available in combination across a single stay. A morning dove session delivering the high-volume action that Argentina is famous for followed by an afternoon pigeon hunt demanding a completely different technique and a much more deliberate pace creates one of the most rewarding single-day sporting contrasts available anywhere in the Pointer Wing Shooting collection. The guides at both properties are experienced in building the daily schedule around both species and maximizing the quality of each session.
Year-round availability at La Salamanca and San Luis provides excellent opportunities regardless of travel dates. The June through September season in Paraguay coincides with the dry season, while Uruguay offers pigeon hunting alongside duck hunting during May through July for one of the collection’s most diverse mixed bag experiences.
