Argentine duck hunting is one of the most extraordinary waterfowl experiences available anywhere in the world and one of the least known outside of serious waterfowling circles. The Parana River system in Santa Fe Province supports over fifteen million ducks annually across thousands of islands, marshes, and backwater habitats. The Buenos Aires Province lagoon system holds over twelve species of resident and migratory ducks in concentrations that make every morning on the water feel genuinely historic.
Pointer Wing Shooting hunts both systems with dedicated lodges in each region operated by guides who have spent years working these specific wetlands and know every corner of the best water in the country.
The Parana River borders thousands of islands, flooded marshlands, backwater channels, and rice-paddy habitat in northern Santa Fe Province that together form one of the most productive waterfowl environments in the Southern Hemisphere. Over fifteen million ducks inhabit this system annually.
The shooting reserve operated by our San Javier and Siriri lodges covers fifty square miles with thirty distinct shooting fields across this territory. Hunting is conducted entirely from boats, beginning before first light with a twenty to forty minute ride through the river channels in the darkness as the sky begins to lighten and the first birds of the morning start to move.
The flat interior of Buenos Aires Province holds a vast network of natural lagoons and seasonal wetlands supporting over twelve species of resident and migratory waterfowl. Our Rosy Billed and Pato Real lodges are positioned in the Rio Salado area, one of the most productive lagoon territories in the province.
Hunting is conducted from fixed blinds with decoy spreads and calling in the traditional style that serious waterfowlers recognize as the most skillful and satisfying form of the sport. Both lodges are within two hours of Ezeiza International Airport, making them the most accessible duck hunting destinations in the Pointer collection.
The diversity of species available during a single day on the Argentine lagoons surprises even the most experienced North American waterfowl hunters. Both the Santa Fe and Buenos Aires Province systems hold the same remarkable variety of resident and migratory waterfowl throughout the May through July season.
Species Present: Rosy-Billed Pochard, Fulvous Tree Duck, Black-Bellied Tree Duck, White-Faced Tree Duck, Southern Widgeon, Brown Pintail, White-Cheeked Pintail, Speckled Teal, Cinnamon Teal, Argentine Red Shoveler, Silver Teal, Black-Headed Duck, and Lake Duck (Argentine Ruddy Duck).
The Rosy-Billed Pochard is the most visually striking of Argentina’s duck species. The male’s brilliant red bill and rich chestnut plumage make it instantly recognizable in flight, while its willingness to work decoy spreads provides one of the most rewarding experiences of the season. For hunters pursuing the Rosy-Billed Pochard specifically, Argentina remains the only destination where it can be hunted throughout its native range in the numbers that define a true trophy waterfowl experience.
Duck hunting days at our Santa Fe lodges begin before sunrise. Breakfast is on the table by five thirty, and the field team is already on the water setting decoys in the pre-dawn darkness. After breakfast, the group loads into boats for the ride to the blind through the Parana River channels, flooded islands, and backwater habitats as the sky begins to lighten ahead of the first birds.
When the blind is reached and the hunters settle in, the morning flight begins with the first light and runs hard until late morning. Your field assistant remains in the blind throughout, calling when needed, managing retrieves, and keeping cold drinks coming. After the morning session, the group returns to the lodge for lunch and a siesta before departing around three thirty for the evening flight.
Buenos Aires Province duck hunting has a more deliberate and traditional character than the Parana marsh program.
Decoy spreads are deployed before hunters arrive, and the morning begins with calling birds into the spread in the style familiar to North American waterfowlers while producing results unlike anything they have experienced at home.
Over twelve species working a single spread simultaneously is not unusual, and the satisfaction of a well-called shot on a Rosy-Billed Pochard or a Southern Widgeon in this setting is a completely different experience from the sustained volume of the Parana. After the morning session, the group returns to the lodge for lunch and a siesta. Perdiz hunting with pointing dogs is available on afternoons at the Buenos Aires Province lodges when conditions allow
The core Argentine duck season runs from May through July, corresponding with the austral winter and the late spring and early summer of North America. This timing provides an outstanding opportunity for waterfowl hunters between seasons at home. Bird numbers across both systems reach their peak during this period, temperatures remain comfortable for long days in the blind, and the season overlaps perfectly with the famous Córdoba dove season, making combination duck and dove programs easy to arrange.
Santa Fe Province offers the Mixed Bag Program featuring duck, dove, and perdiz from May through July, while the Cast and Blast program combining dove shooting and Golden Dorado fishing operates during March, April, September, and December.
Buenos Aires Province duck hunting is available throughout May, June, and July.
